Data Engineer

About Us
Autonomous Technologies is a Canadian digital consultancy (Burnaby, BC) with a growing delivery team in Karachi. We build and manage data solutions for startups, agencies, and mid-market companies across North America and Europe. Our clients span sports analytics, marketing technology, fintech, and e-commerce.
We’re not a recruitment agency. We’re a technically-led team — our engineers actually build pipelines, design data models, and ship production systems every day. That’s what makes working here different: you’ll be surrounded by people who understand your craft, not just people who fill seats.
The Role
We’re expanding our Data & AI practice and looking for a Data Engineer to join our core engineering team. You’ll design, build, and maintain data pipelines and infrastructure for a mix of internal products and projects with our international partners.
This isn’t a single-client, single-stack job. You’ll work across different industries, datasets, and challenges — one month you might be building a real-time sports data pipeline, the next you’re architecting a marketing analytics warehouse. If you’re someone who gets bored doing the same thing for years, this is built for you.
What You’ll Do
- Design and build scalable ETL/ELT pipelines that move data from APIs, databases, and streaming sources into cloud warehouses
- Architect and maintain data models in BigQuery, Snowflake, or Redshift — star schemas, slowly changing dimensions, the real stuff
- Write clean, tested Python code for data extraction, transformation, and orchestration
- Set up and manage workflow orchestration with Apache Airflow or Cloud Composer (DAGs, scheduling, monitoring, alerting)
- Build and maintain dbt or Dataform transformation layers with proper testing, documentation, and version control
- Collaborate directly with international client teams via Slack, GitHub, and video calls — English communication is part of the job
- Own your pipelines end-to-end: from source exploration to production monitoring to incident response
What We’re Looking For
- 2+ years of hands-on data engineering experience (not just coursework — we want people who’ve built things that run in production)
- Strong SQL — you can write complex queries, optimize slow joins, and design normalized/denormalized models without hand-holding
- Solid Python for data work: Pandas, requests, file I/O, API integration. Bonus if you’ve used PySpark or Polars
- Experience with at least one cloud data warehouse: BigQuery (preferred), Snowflake, or Redshift
- Familiarity with orchestration tools: Airflow, Prefect, Dagster, or Cloud Composer
- Git proficiency — you use version control for everything, not just code. dbt models, Airflow DAGs, documentation.
- Clear English communication — you’ll work async with teams in different time zones. Writing matters.
Must Have
- Bachelor Degree or Higher
- 2+ years of hands-on data engineering experience
- Strong SQL
- Solid Python
- Experience with at least one cloud data warehouse
- Familiarity with orchestration tools
- Git proficiency
Nice to have
- Experience with dbt or Dataform for transformation layer management
- Exposure to streaming: Kafka, Pub/Sub, Kinesis
- CI/CD for data pipelines (GitHub Actions, Cloud Build)
- Familiarity with data quality frameworks (Great Expectations, dbt tests, Soda)
- Any cloud certifications (GCP Professional Data Engineer, AWS Data Analytics, etc.)
Why Autonomous
- Competitive pay benchmarked to international rates, not local agency rates
- Work with international clients across the US, UK, Canada, and Europe — build your resume with real cross-border experience
- Technically-led environment — your manager is an engineer, not a project coordinator. Code reviews, architecture discussions, and technical growth are part of the culture
- Variety of work — you’ll touch sports analytics, marketing data, financial pipelines, and AI infrastructure. No one here does the same thing for 3 years.
- Canadian company, not a local agency — real international operations, Clutch-rated, PSEB registered.
